Reader note – this book has now been published! Full details, including links to order, can be found here.
My dear friends, I’m over the moon to be able to announce that a Columbo book of my very own will be published next month!
Entitled The Columbo Companion 1968-78, the book is a collection of my reviews of all 45 ‘classic era’ Columbo episodes that aired between 1968’s Prescription: Murder and 1978’s The Conspirators. All the reviews have been revised and updated for print, and include new information not available at the time of publishing the original posts. There are even some very rare updates where I’ve changed my mind on an issue, sometimes after good-natured debate with readers of this very blog. Well done you…
As regular visitors to the site will know, my reviews go into great detail on every aspect of each episode, from the strength of the central clues and gotchas, to the performances, production values and key milestones in Columbo’s character development. What is changing in print is that the episode synopses have been abridged to provide a more succinct overview of each crime and its conclusion before the analysis kicks in. The aim of the book is for it to be an immediate companion to the Columbo viewing experience, wherever readers may be.
I’m delighted to report that Columbo authorial doyen Mark Dawidziak has supplied the foreword to the book, which will be published through Bonaventure Press (the publisher behind David Koenig’s sensational Shooting Columbo tome of 2021) with a release date of Tuesday September 20, 2022. There are also truly wonderful illustrations of the good Lieutenant and every killer throughout the book, courtesy of US-based artist (and the youngest Columbo fan I know in real life), Kosperry (see her work on Instagram here and Twitter here).
Weighing in at almost 350 pages, The Columbo Companion will retail for US$24.95 (or the equivalent in different parts of the world). It’ll be available to order on Amazon in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, Japan, Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Sweden and Poland, so I’ll holler when it goes live. There will also be a Kindle version for you digital readers out there, while Mrs Columbo is rumoured to have already placed her name on the waiting list at the library to get first dibs on it.
While Amazon will be the easiest way for folks to get hold of the book, I’m a staunch believer of supporting local bookstores whenever possible, so The Columbo Companion will be available to/through numerous wholesale distributors. If your local store accepts special orders and works with a distributor that carries the title, they will be able to order it in for you. If not, the store can contact Bonaventure Press directly via email to Bonaventure.press@gmail.com to arrange this.
I had originally hoped to have the book available in 2021, but my dear daughter’s illness put a stop to all that and I’m very pleased to have been able to rekindle it this year with the support of Bonaventure Press. I have no idea if it’ll sell any copies beyond my own family, but I can assure you that it’s just lovely to have my own contribution to Columbo lore ‘out there’ in the world of print. If my book ever shares the same shelf with David K’s Shooting Columbo and Mark Dawidziak’s The Columbo Phile, I’ll consider it a very great honour.
In unrelated news, I’m similarly thrilled to report the safe collection of my daughter’s NEW PUPPY, which we were granted through the Make a Wish Foundation as she continues her recovery from cancer. The adorable beast is a Silky Terrier – the precise breed of dog owned by Beth Chadwick’s overbearing mother in Lady in Waiting. I knew there would be a Columbo connection somewhere…
Thanks to all those generous souls who donated towards the upkeep of the blog this month. I will be passing the proceeds on to Make a Wish in recognition of the sterling work they’ve put in to bring this new bundle of impish joy into our lives.
Greetings! I see the book is available in Amazon- paperback! Ordering now… 😊🙋🏻♂️📕
Just ordered it on Amazon! Can’t wait to read it!
I have just ordered the book. Lots of love from a Columbo fan (and Columbophile fan) in the Netherlands.
Can’t wait to get this..the illustrations are fabulous!
Wonderful news.
Can’t wait
That’s smashing news! One more copy is definitely sold already.
Thanks Maik, you’re a champ!
I really wanna pre-order this before it sells out, any idea when it will be up on Amazon (Germany)? Still can’t find it there.
Long time reader first time commenter, thanks for all the great work – glad to support by buying the book!
I will announce on the blog once it’s available. I don’t think it will sell out, so fear not!
Oo, put me down for two copies, one for my own greasy little hands and one to pass along to my sister who is just as big a fan as I am! Congratulations on the book. 🙂 I’ll look forward to it.
I will definitely buy the book and anxiously await the revised edition with *all* the episodes! I’m looking forward to having a print copy of your terrific reviews.
Awesome news! I love the illustrations and I will definitely buy a copy.
Great! 🙂
That cover is cool as hell. Recognising stylised versions of Columbo murderers was surprisingly joyful. Whoever’s the artist he/she did an amazing job !
Well done and congratulations, CP! I will definitely be buying a “Companion.” And those illustrations of the murderers are spot on; and hilarious!
Congratulations on the book! Glad to hear your daughter is continuing to recover. 🙂
I recognise Kosperry’s name from some delightful YouTube videos with scenes from /Columbo/ and /Seinfeld/ animated with cartoon animals! The cover looks great!
Will the book be out in paperback?
Thanks Felicity! Yes, book will be paperback and Kindle.
Congratulations, Columbophile! So awesome- I’m buying it, of course- and I’ll mention it on all the online sites I manage- dedicated to Ms Mattick- “Margaret Williams”- the stepdaughter in Ransom for a Dead Man …Hope she is mentioned in this upcoming masterpiece …
🙋🏻♂️
Looking forward to owning this gem.
Great news CP – the book and pup! Best wishes.
Congratulations on your soon-to-be-available book! Now I know exactly what gift to ask Santa for as my present this Christmas!
Will certainly purchase this wonderfully illustrated book!
Congratulations. I look forward to reading the book. I always enjoy the Columbophile (which is why I occasionally donate a cup of coffee).
Thanks Spelios, your support is very much appreciated!
Are you sure you’ve got enough knowledge to write a Columbo book? LOL! Congratulations on the book and the puppy.
Thanks Craig. Mrs Columbo says I’m the 2nd best Columbo author out there. She says there are 80 other writers tied for 1st…
😄
Sweet puppy !!
The puppy is actually scream-aloud cute. With daughter’s permission I may include a snap of the beast in a future post.
Congratulations! I hope your daughter is doing better. Is a Silky Terrier the same as a Yorkshire terrier? Looks bigger but just as cute!
Yes! Silkies are essentially the same as Yorkies, just a fraction bigger with a less dense coat. Extremely cute!
Congratulations and thanks, Colombophile! I just purchased the entire DVD series and will pre-purchase the book. Having your insightful and amusing remarks readily available for quick reference as I work my way through series will make it SOOO much easier and more enjoyable.
Fantastic, thanks Robben! The book and DVD set will be perfect companions!
Congratulations! Others have already said the things I would have said, so I’ll just buy a celebratory coffee for you 🙂
Cheers!
You are nice, thank you very much!
So excited for the book!!! Congrats on the puppy
Thank you! I must post a photo of the puppy with the book once I get my own copy!
I don’t have the money at the moment, but soon I hope to purchase all three books. Huge smile!
Dear Columbophile, we’re the ones over the moon, surely. Congratulations for this milestone! All the best for your family.
That’s very nice of you, thank you!
I’ll definitely be buying a copy, and I can’t wait!
Sounds great! Looking forward to it.
Your tremendous blog posts spanning lo these many years guarantee the book’s prose will sparkle. But good golly Miss Molly those illustrations are perfectly executed and sooooo fun to look at. Those alone are worth the purchase price!
Awesome! Can’t wait to buy it… Hope Margaret (Pattye Mattick) appears in the book…. 👍🙋🏻♂️💐👩🏻🦰👓🙏
Margaret of course gets a mention or two, although, ALAS, not an illustration. The one of the lady lawyer is a good one, though.
Here’s hoping you sell out the first run [but not before we get ours]! So exciting & welcome news, both the book & daughter’s continued well being. Welcome to the Columbo World young puppy, there is good reason to be yapping away.
That is FABULOUS news (both the book and the puppy). Good for toy. I plan on adding it to my Columbo book collection.
Love Love love the cover! I look forward to purchasing the book as soon as its released!
What a treat! Can’t wait! And when my copy arrives, I’m turning first to the “About the Author” page. One day, one of us will crack the greatest of all Columbo mysteries: namely, who exactly is The Columbophile? Clues trickle in, particularly recently (e.g., “8 hours west of Alice Springs by car, in the Gibson Desert in WA”). Does anyone know if a published book’s copyright documents can be accessed online?
The ‘About the Author’ page will be heavily redacted…
How exciting for you and us and looking for that announcement that the book is available. Thank you.
Dear Columbophile, many congratulations, what great news! Can’t wait to get a copy! Following Glenn’s question, I’d love to have a signed copy as well, if possible. And I’m certain there will be plenty of demand for them.
Congrats! Exciting news. I’ll be sure and order as soon as we can. And as always, sending good vibes and a cup of coffee your way. By the way, I’m enjoying Columbo & The Great Santani (?) sparring match this am. Best to you & family.
Thanks Lee, you’re a champ and your support is very much appreciated.
Lee Porter … I watched the Santini episode yesterday (DVR’d from Sundance TV) … I love that episode, and it was even better this time because of all the recent insightful comments on this blog.
Great news. As soon as I can book it (see what I did there!!) on Amazon I’ll do so – so let us know when we can pre-order.
Presumably you’ll do one for the new era – obviously when you’ve finished that series?
Keep up the great work and congratulations on the new edition (no, not the book. LOL!!)
Hello sir, and thank you for that positive response. I’ll put up a new blog post once pre-order is available, likely to be in the next week or so. I’d like to do a sequel book in due course, if there’s a market for it.
Congratulations!!! I can’t wait – will definitely be putting this on my Christmas list. (Ohhh, who’m I kidding? I’ll be buying this as soon as it comes out!) Thanks for all your hard work! 🧥
Thank you, that’s very nice of you!
Congratulations! I will preorder my copy as soon as you let us know that is possible. Thank you so much for all you do for us fans.
You are very kind, thanks Michael.
Outstanding!!
I have questions:
*Along with the reviews, will there be selected topic pieces published also – for example, Best Gotchas, Most Loathsome Killers, etc? Or are you saving that for the sequel book?
*If you’re changing your mind on some review points, will the Classic ep rankings be included in the book and updated accordingly?
*The cover is unique and collectible. Could prints or lithographs be coming?
*In lieu of the traditional author tour, would an online promotional event be possible? If you put on an ice cream man uniform or costume yourself as if you’re about to murder your nephew for a lottery ticket, that could conceal your identity (dressing as a crazed sex therapist woman in black might be a fedora too far for you).
*Authors always make signed book copies available, right?
Hi Glenn, some excellent questions! I’ll do my best to respond: –
– The rankings will be included in the book, but remain the same order as on the site.
– I hadn’t thought about prints etc. I’ll speak to the publisher!
– I envisage some sort of guerilla marketing campaign where (as you suggest) I, or devoted readers, dress up as Columbo killers and create Riley Greenleaf-style rampages around their local communities. It’ll create an ‘It’ movie promo vibe when our arrests are reported on in local press / social media circles. And I’ll have you know I look stunning in a black dress/wig/fedora combo. (this is another thing I’ll need to speak to the publisher about).
– Not sure how this would work given my geographic location and distance from the printed matter, but there may be some ways we can work around this should there be sufficient demand.
Dang! I was hoping that “Forgotten Lady” – the most underrated Columbo – would be moving up from #29.
Re: Guerilla marketing – I look forward to slinking through my neighborhood to the sound of brush-drumming as The Great Santini.
If your blog topic pieces are being considered for a possible literary sequel, I humbly suggest a title of “The Columbo Catalogue” We’ll be waiting!
A couple of blog posts have been repurposed for the back section of the book, but it was running pretty long with just the reviews, so little else could be crammed in. Perhaps if the book tops the New York Times bestseller list I’ll be able to petition for a TRILOGY of books 😉
Very nice! And the best seasons—”the originals”! Great job!😎👍🏻
WOW! COLUMBOPHILE! Congratulations! I’m pinching myself reading about your new book “The Columbo Companion 1968-78,” with a foreward by Mark Dawidziak and illustrations by US-based artist Theo Solorio! This is a dream come true for my best friend and fellow Columbo fan, Tim, and me. We have enjoyed reading your blog to each other while making dinner over the years. Continued healing to your darling daughter and kisses to your new li’l pup. Cheers!
Your response makes my heart sing! Thanks Toluca, and pass my best wishes on to Tim also.
Very cool. Looking forward to it… and congrats!
Congratulations!
That’s what I was wishing for! I like turning a page made of paper so much more than scrolling down a seemingly endless online article. You must have read my mind. Now I know what I want for Christmas.
Thank you Columbologist! I hope turning the pages won’t cause RSI. It’ll be quite a hefty tome!
Ah, so that’s why the “Companion” can’t comprise the years 1989-2003. These will have to be saved for a second book maybe next year.
We shall see, but that would be nice!
Your posts are always SO good! I will certainly be getting a copy of the book. Congratulations!!! I can’t wait for it
That’s awfully good of you to say, thanks ever so much.
