My dear friends, I do trust you all had/are having a good Christmas break and have managed to factor in a little Columbo viewing between turkey sandwiches and glasses of liquid filth.
As regular readers will know, there has been a great deal of change and upheaval at Columbophile HQ these past couple of months – notably packing up from the outback and moving back to the city. This is happily now complete (with no toe stubbings or breakages), and I’ve even managed to secure a new full-time job, which starts in early January.
Alas, my flash home laptop has developed a critical issue and has been sent off for repair/replacement (it’s very much under warranty), so I’ve had negligible access to the blog and my emails until borrowing one from said new job over the Christmas holiday. If you’ve sent me mail and are awaiting a reply, please accept my apologies.
All this has and will continue to curtail my Columbo writing until I’m fully back in the groove – but don’t dare think for a moment that the blog is winding down. I have numerous articles in various states of completion, many more planned, some guest posts in the bag and the Ashes to Ashes episode review almost complete. The blog output will be less in 2023, but it won’t dry up quite yet.
Before I go, I’d like to say a big thanks to all who picked up a copy of my book for themselves or loved ones for Christmas – and to those who alerted me to the fact via social media. You’re all lovely! Fingers crossed that it has sold sufficiently well to pave the way for a sequel covering the 1989-2003 episodes in due course.
That’s about all for now, except to with you all a happy and successful (and Columbo-filled) 2023.
I have enjoyed this blog for years. Congrats on your move and your job. I’m so glad you have no desire to quit working on the website.
Happy New Year to you and the Columbophile community!
May some TV network will realize that “Columbo II” is GOLD!
From Portugal, I wish the Columbophile community a Happy New Year!

Belated Holiday Greetings to CP and all of the Columboverse! Here’s wishing each and everyone a very happy and successful 2023!
Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to you, Columbophile! Wishing the best of health to you and your family, and success with the book (which I loved by the way).
Best wishes for the new year to you all! Looking forward to final the few reviews and all the other content, hopefully for years to come.
Any Old Port in a Storm is one of my faves, too.
It’s sort of a logic puzzle when Columbo is asking about the victim in the murder. He’s asking if the victim would ever go diving in the ocean, if it was raining outside. Someone says he went diving every day and it wouldn’t matter if it was raining or not because you would be under water anyway. Columbo is using logic to solve the crime.
And he also asks if the victim was on some kind of strange diet where he wouldn’t eat for several days at a time. His friends answer that no he wasn’t of course, he loved to eat and ate all the time. Columbo’s questioning is very smart and logical.
The performances of Donald Pleasance and Julie Harris are really great. It’s a very well written episode, in my opinion.
I liked the way Columbo and Julie Harris’s character interacted.
He’s respectful to her. He seems to know she’s not really involved with the murder.
Yes … very well said. All strong observations, IMHO.
And I’ve always considered this to be one of Donald Pleasance’s top roles.
This holiday I got one of my relatives into Columbo. I started him with Exercise in Fatality, A Stitch in Crime, Any Old Port in the Storm and Suitable for Framing. I’m thinking to pick up your book for him next Christmas!
Good job, Garret!
I like those choices, too. 🙂 Exercise and Port are two of my faves.
‘Exercise’ gets better with every watch. The mutual hatred between Columbo and Janus sizzles.
Very good performance by Robert Conrad.
I watch Exercise whenever it comes on, too. There’s lots of good snarky interplay between Columbo and Janus. 🙂
May everyone have a better year than Jim and Mrs La Sanka.
Thank you for another wonderful year of all things Columbo, Columbophile. Congratulations again on your very enjoyable new book “The Columbo Companion, 1968-78: Investigating Every Detail of All 45 ‘Classic Era’ Columbo Adventures.” Best regards to you, Mrs. Columbophile and your darling daughter–may she continue to heal and thrive. Happy New Year from Burbank, California!
Sundance Channel is running Columbo all day this Saturday and Sunday , 1/31/22 and 1/1/23.
THANK YOU for posting this! I DVR the Columbo episodes from the Sundance Channel, but I’m always so happy when they do a marathon. 🙂
My best wishes to you! Thank you for sharing your writing, which I always love to read.
Thank you for this update, my friend, Columbophile. I hope that your daughter continues to do well. I await more of your fascinating articles.
I love all your reviews! You combine thoughtful analysis with great humour and always leave me thinking and laughing at the same time.
I only recently found your blog and am amazed at the number of your followers and how varied and insightful their comments are. It amazes me that so many of us still enjoy and can think deeply about a character that was created so long ago and cannot appear in new episodes. I am glad to be in such good company.
I watched Columbo when I was in my early twenties, but now, as a clinical psychologist, I have a deeper appreciation of the quality of the writing and acting in the early episodes and enjoy them so much more. I wish you all the best for 2023.
May you handle all of your future endeavors better than Columbo letting the very Columbo-smitten super sexy Faye Dunaway slip through his fingers!
Thanks a million for your wit, warmth, wonderful update & endless Columbophilia. All the best with your new frontier & look forward to anything you share with us in the upcoming year. All the best & greetings from Greenwich Village!
Season’s Greetings!
Happy New Year!🎉
Thanks for all the laughs you bring and congratulations for your success! U.S> fans that watch on cozi tv, look out for New Year’s Columbo special, 11am-5pm eastern time.
All the best for the New Year.
All the best to you CP. And as Brit living in Aus, you’ll be able to walk around with a smug look on your face, at the end of next summer – when we take The Ashes back off them!!
Yes the England cricket team are in top form at the present. We’ll see how they go – however the the home side has an advantage.
Happy New Year to Columbophile and all on this site. Best with the new job and new laptop 🙂
Welcome to the “club” Rickey.
Right on, bro! Hopefully a 5-0 whitewashing!
You’ve clearly been celebrating too much this Christmas. LOL!!
Guilty as charged!
